UPS Dilemna
Posted by Brian Tario on April 23, 2007 at 11:35 pmThis is a not-so-sexy topic in an edit suite…the UPS. But it’s necessary and I need a bigger one. A few months ago the incomparable Bob Zelin suggested I buy the APC Smart UPS 1500RM-2RU. Well, I haven

April 23, 2007 at 11:47 pmWe use the same APC unit Bob told you to get. I think I replied to your post as well.
The 1500 is plenty. We have a Mac, and Xserve Raid and CRT monitor hooked up to each UPS.In case of a power failure the battery is not going to last for an hour or two, but enough
minutes for you to save and close all apps.Stuart Ferreyra

April 23, 2007 at 11:55 pmThanks Stuart! What about the Mac OS’s ability to safely shutdown the RAID and the Mac? That’s really the key for me. I don’t care if I only get 10 minutes of runtime as long as the shutdown is safe and automatic if I’m out at lunch.

April 24, 2007 at 12:14 amI do not use it, but I have tried it.
As soon as you connect the USB cable, OS X will show a preference pane in the preferences
window with options for the APC UPS.I do not remember why I disconneted it. There was something I didn’t like about it, but that
was more of a personal preference than anything else. The unit works as is advertised.

As Stuart mentioned, you forgot to mention plugging in a monitor to your UPS. If you don’t have, at the very least, your main system monitor plugged in to your UPS you will not be able to navigate to manually shut everything down and only an auto shutdown will work.

April 24, 2007 at 2:03 amCRTs pull more power than anything else you’ve got on your list. We don’t use the battery backup for CRTs, instead we just use surge suppression for those since you don’t lose any data when they shut down. And the LCD monitor for your computer isn’t going to pull nearly as much as the CRT broadcast monitor.
