Is FCS2 shipping May 1st? — Better clone…
Posted by David Roth weiss on April 21, 2007 at 5:35 pmAm I correct in assuming that Apple will be shipping on or around May 1st?
In anticipation I’m cloning my current system drive right now to create a safe backup just in case FCS2, like most initial software releases, isn’t completely ready for prime time. I recommend that everyone here who works for a living do the same before updating or upgrading your FCP systems.

April 21, 2007 at 5:44 pmCould be May 01 or could be May 31. Apple says it will ship in May.
And Yes, it is better to begin with a fresh install of everything. Spring Cleaning for your MAC.
I plan to make a complete backup on a Firewire drive, so I can get to FCP 5.1 should I want to.

I don’t disagree with you at all. I’m not usually a bleeding edge updater, but, I’m getting mine early this time around so I can start learning the new things as soon as possible. I’ll have my 5.1.4 clone on standby for on-going projects and anthing mission critical.

April 22, 2007 at 3:13 amOK, we can all agree that having your system as it stands right now backed up so you don’t have to worry about “down time.” What I would like is a link to a step by step process of creating a firewire back up over my main system that I could work from, “just in case.” Does that even make sense?

Not entirely, but perhaps you’re not certain how a system clone works. First, get yourslef a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner. Its free, which is a pretty good price if you ask me. Now, clone your system drive to any firewire drive. Now, go into System Prefs and change the boot disk to boot to your clone for a test. Voila, you can boot to that drive. Now, change back to your original system disk in the computer and store the clone on your shelf. When you load FCS2 you’ll know that at anytime you just go back to your old version by booting off the clone.

April 22, 2007 at 5:13 amAll our systems have two drives internal. When such an upgrade situation looms, we install another OS on the spare drive and load the new app there. Anything boken we just boot back with the original drive. Any kind of cloning and restore from clone process is time consuming.
And hey, even if its broken, there are enough exciting new things in FCS 2 that will definitely work fine.

April 26, 2007 at 8:18 amI will update on day one, I go the install on a separate drive. If you do this make sure you back up your project files before opening them in the FCP6. I love being on the bleeding edge but always keep the bandaids close. With the two drive setup you are minutes away from going back.
I have a G4 867 that has three OSs on it, 9.2, 10.3.? and 10.4.9. I still need to true OS9 boot for my Sonic encoder card.
