Is Live Type Still Alive?
Posted by Gary Slickman on April 18, 2007 at 1:22 amI have read the specs on FCP6 and could not find any mention of Live Type. What is the titling componet of FCP6…Is it now a part of Motion, discontinued or did I miss something?

April 18, 2007 at 1:33 amIt’s becoming the poor stepchild unfortunately. I think it’s a great little app. It’s still there if you look hard enough.

It’s also listed in system requirements.
12GB for LiveFonts and LiveType animated elements and templates
All the best,

April 18, 2007 at 1:26 pmI guess it’s just not getting a real update like the others(seeings as it’s on version 2.1 already).
A pity really. I kind of wish they’d integrate a decent titling tool into FCP inself. Avid’s titling capabilities are much stronger and don’t require jumping to another app, exporting quicktime files and dumping them into your project. The workflow for titling with Livetype always seemed a bit clunky to me.

You’re kidding right?
[Peterd] “and don’t require jumping to another app, exporting quicktime files and dumping them into your project”
Um, have you thought of simply importing a LiveType ipr. file directly into FCP and then using “Open in Editor” to make your changes?
So yes, while text handling could certainly still be improved in FCP, I still wouldn’t use Avid as the standard bearer.

No, actually he is not kidding at all. If you haven’t used Avid then I understand, but he is referring to being able to see the background video for the title you are creating WITHOUT the extra step of kicking out a QT ref movie and then importing that into LiveType. That workflow is very “clunky” IMO.
Sometimes it is great to create a simple graphic with the ability to line it up with your video, and do so without jumping applications.

Respectfully, I have considerable experience with Avid, FCP AND discreet edit. I agree that there are certainly limitations in both FCP’s text tool and LiveType that need addressing. However I also feel that your comment is a little contradictory. If we’re talking about a “simple” graphic, then that could be done in FCP’s text tool. If we’re talking about a LiveType motion graphic, then what in Avid yields comparable results? Certainly not the Title Tool. I haven’t worked with Marquee in a few years (Version 1), but it was certainly no walk in the park.
Perhaps one issue is my having had experience working with Title Motion on discreet edit. It’s no LiveType for motion graphics, but for quick, easy & great looking still graphics, it couldn’t be beat. It’s been a few years so I don’t know if this is still true.
Maybe the Motion templates will be a help in the new release.

Its time to lay it to rest…. Motion has replaced LiveType!
