Problem editing HDV with DVCPRO HD 720p60
Posted by Jason Starr on April 2, 2007 at 4:18 pmI am editing a project in which most of the material was shot with Varicams in DVCPRO HD 720p60. However I need to mix in some shots from a Sony Z1 which records in HDV 1080i60. In a Final Cut Pro DVCPRO HD 720p60 sequence I have been rendering the HDV material but it looks like the motion is being strobed. I tried exporting the clips through Compressor without a positive outcome. I have a Kona LHe card but the AJA people tell me it takes a Kona 3 to do the cross conversion. Is anyone familiar with this problem? Suggestions short of buying a Kona 3?

The Kona LHe does cross conversions and down conversions too, just no upconversions, however its the deinterlacing that might be an issue for the card since you’re going from interlaced to progressive. I’d give your card a shot and see if you can do the cross-convert on the fly. To do so, just choose the proper Easy Setup in FCP, in this case, DVCPRO HD 720p60, and try to capture analog from your HDV camera or deck. Let us know if it works.

No it does not. Only the Kona 3 performs the 720 to 1080i cross conversions.

Shake can do a pretty good job of making this conversion but in all honesty, the hardware conversion in the AJA Kona 3 is flawless, we use it here all the time.

Oh, that’s interesting. If it does other cross-conversions on the fly why is this one different?

It’s listed on the feature set right on the AJA page. Only the Kona 3 and 3X perform the HD cross conversions. The LH and LHe do not.

April 2, 2007 at 10:19 pmIf shake and kona3 are out as an option, try mpeg streamclip.
it does an amazing job at high-quality conversions.

April 3, 2007 at 4:44 amBut it does not do a good job of interlacing.
Some how you need to convert 60i to 60p.
That might be tough. At least you are
going from 1080i to 720p.
Just try putting one of your 1080i
clips in the sequence and just trying
a deinterlace. You might need to try
Cinema tools or Shake as well.
