  • when keying in AE, how do i export the clip

    without any background????

For instance, I brougt in a clip from FCP shot against a green screen. I keyed it in AE, leaving only my subjecty and the grey/white checkerboard background…so I thought it was rid of everything but the subject. However, when i sent it back to FCP, the background was RED.

I think I used a spill supressor, but should that have mattered?

What export settings did you use?

You need to use something that supports alpha channels, like QuickTime, million +. I always use the Animation codec. I am not sure if other codecs could be used. I forget which setting I use for straight vs. premultiplied.

There are some other formats which will work.

It may also have something to do with how FCP handles the alpha channel. I don’t use FC, so I am not sure about that……. Different NLE’s handle mattes differently.

yeah, you had suggested a QT (millions) or Animation as the save, but before or after the clip has been in AE?

Press Cmd-shift / to add the comp to the render queue. In your output settings you will default to Animation compression BUT with only RGB channels. You need to drop the Channels dropdown and select RGB+Alpha (the tranparency). Two dropdowns below that one, select “Straight” rather than Pre-Multiplied.

Depending on your FCP version you will need to tell the program how to interpret your alpha. Select your imported clip in FCP. At the bottom of the Modify menu select Alpha> Straight.

If you view the render in Quicktime it will look ridiculous because QT won’t render the alpha correctly.
