  • MPeg Streamclip compression to DVCPro50 NTSC

Posted by Paula Stein on March 26, 2007 at 9:33 am

I am trying to convert a DVD into MPeg Stream clip software to make a quicktime file for FCP. I was told to use the setting DVCPRO50 NTSC for the compression codec. The problem is when I select a sequence setting in FCP, it only offers DVCPRO PAL… not NTSC… but it does have DV PRO50 NTSC . Are these differenct codecs? Do I need to download DVCPRO50 NTSC from the web?

The bottom line is I need to convert DVD footage that is compatable to the sequence settings in FCP so I don’t have to render all the time. I originally converted the DVD from DVDxDVDPro, which is a very basic converter. Mpeg Streamclip seems to be a much better program. If anyone has any rendering solutions..I am all ears. It seems that I am CONSTANTLY having to rendering my edit, which also contains jpegs and AE quicktimes files. This entirely slows down my work because I have to stop and render for long periods of time. (mostly appears in orange). Any prefs on Unlimited RT and Safe RT?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi paula,
DVCPro50 is a good codec for extracting video from a MPG2 because is 422 and the files are not too big. You may not find the DVCProNTSC because is the same than the DV NTSC. In PAL is not the same bat in NTSC is the very same codec. if you got FC, QTPro or Compressor, you got all the bunch.
MPGStreamclip is the solution for converting the MPG2 to .mov. What you must do is to set properly MPGStreamclip so the files you get match the setting of your FC sequence so after you don’t have to render everytime.

    Paula,

In their infinite wisdom, the good folks at Apple have named the PAL version of the codec DVDPro50 and the NTSC version DV50. So, select DV50 and you’ll be fine.

    Hi David,
I haven’t realiced that before but, as you say, in the Sequence Presets appear as DV50 NTSC. But if you open in FC the Sequence Setting and click Codec Options, in the list of codecs shows up like DVCPro50 NTSC. That also happens in QT.
Anyway that foesn’t change much life.
    Cheers,
