I am having my audio mastered on an hour long project next week at a studio two hours away from my studio, and they have asked for the entire FCP project on an external drive. This is not a problem, as the project already exists on an external drive, but I am wondering if there is a efficient way to export the project so that the movie files are super low res, and the audio files are full sized. I would ideally get this project onto another external drive so that I can continue to do color correction while they master the audio. Is there a efficient way to move my project to another drive and downsizing the resolution of the movie so that I can fit the entire project onto say 120 gig drive? I would rather not have to purchase another 500 gig external just for this occassion. Also, I have thought of using media manager, by copying and making a new project, but I have always had mixed results with this process, seems as though I always lose clips, render files, sound gets tweaked out.

OMF the audio and send them a quicktime. You can do it all by web, email, or ftp. They should be able to sync the qt to the omf in some way. A tone/flashframe etc. When they’re done they send you an aiff.

I think that if you want to reduce the size of your project, the Media manager is the only solution. Anyway I do not understand why your sound studio ask for the full FC project. I’ve sent few times audio to mixed and allways they had been happy with a OMF and a small format QT movie to have a visual refference. You can also export “Audio as AIFF(s). Like that you get every channel of your time-line exported as a .aiff and they can be manipulated the same than with a OMF. The only problem is that instead of exporting just the audio clips that you get in your time-line, export the full audio track, even if there is not audio. I guess (I’ve never tried this option) can make the files bigger.

When you export the QT reference .mov just ask them what codec they prefer.
I sent one the other day as H.264 and the audio studio was still
behind as far as Max OS and QT. I sent then a QT encoded with Sorensen
    and burned-in a TC window.

That’s strange. I’ve been working with an audio production facility for over 2 years and I simply send them an OMF of the project and an H.264 Quicktime movie of the piece. He doesn’t want or need the FCP project as there’s really no reason for that if you’re using Pro Tools or something similar.

I’m betting they’ve been burned by others not sending them something they need and they know if they have the entire project and all the media, that means they can go back in and get what they need without having to go back to the editor and wait until the editor has time.

It’s not a usual request. Pros don’t usually have to worry about that kind of thing, but it can happen.

Thank you guys for your responses. I am going to speak with the woman that runs the studio and see if the OMF acompanied with a QT would be feasible. seems the best route to me.
    I appreciate the inteligent answers!

Last time I did an OMF they got all the crossfades, but the audio keyframing was gone. Is that normal?

Yes speak to the facility. Don’t just send a Qt file without asking for format. H.264 is mpeg and may be a problem. OMFs don’t transfer keyframed audio levels nor plugins like EQ. They do included dissolves and can include clip gain.

Automatic Duck software can convert keyframe levels to a Protools session, but not everyone wants Protools sessions so ask!

I have at times been supplied a whole project on a drive. If you can’t afford a drive then I am not sure if you have the budget for sound post. At the very least you could consider it as a project backup.

Use Media Manger to copy the project over as mjpeg, which compresses the pics but not the audio.
