jaggie Graphics and XDCAM HD HQ 35 sequences?
hey there,
with the colour space of XDCAM HD being 4:2:0 does that mean that any XDCAM HD 35mbs sequences will have issues with jaggies on graphics as per DV timelines?

I haven’t seen any of this at all and we use HQ mode only.
Do your graphics have a sharp thin lines?

sorry it’s more of a question in theory. We are 90% of the way in going with XDCAM HD as our aquisition format and I just had the thought about the graphics when i was considering the 4:2:0 colourspace. DV has issues with graphics and text because of the 4:1:1 colour space and was curious to see whether XDCAM had the same issues or whether the 35mbs made this a non issue.

I understand fully what you are saying. Now, I am using NTSC video and my experience with XDCAM HD and graphics has been great, no jaggies.
From personal experience, when jaggies occur are because of one of many things. One of which is wrong format, like using DV graphics on an 8-bit Uncompressed timeline. Another is a field dominance issue. Another is the style of text you have chosen.
But as far as jaggies using the XDCAM HD codec, I have seen none.
Have you seen this in PAL or are you just asking about the format in genreral. If I’m not mistaken, FCP converts the color space to 4:2:2 while inside of FCP but I haven’t noticed any loss what so ever when written back to disc.

Very true…
Another thing to consider is that you can set FCP to render everything to ProRes very easily and this should get rid of any of these issues you may be seeing.
The other option to consider… Capture all of your media to another codec. Something that people seem to miss about HDV and its derivatives is that Sony intended for this to be an acquisition format, not an edit format. Meaning, that HDV is an encoded transport stream of video, not an edit stream. It was originally expected of editors to capture into another codec for editing but the industry has changed that thought and has left us with a quandary.
