XML Subtitles
Hello,
I have a 90 min. foreign language documentary that has tons of subtitles. So far, my editor has been using the FCP text tool which is very time consuming. I’ve glimpsed at some options out there: Belle Nuit, XML2text, which we are playing around with. I was wondering is there a simple way to use one column in an excel spreadsheet for the subtitles, and then import? I’m assuming the subtitles would be then butted up against each other. Then could we adjust the clips timecode & length within FCP then reexport to another excel spreadsheet that would then include the timecode & length in other columns? I’ve tried Filemaker Pro to no avail. I’ve also checked out this link for info:

Any info to make XML subtitling simpler would be most appreciated!

another thought might be doing the sub-titles in dvd studio pro, or just editing to a digibeta tape and having closed captioning done.
it might be more cost effective that way….my 002 cents

I should clarify that we need the subtitles for our working cut, and since it’s a doc the subtitles do change constantly. The final subtitles for the film might be done with DVDSP. Thanks.

very simple if you have some basic programming knowledge:
all you’re doing, potentially, is reading in a tab delimited file, and placing the contents into predefined text generator containers, and saving that back out.
if you ave a basic understanding of applescript (or can use google and are willing to learn) then theres nothing very special about doing this.

You might want to take a look at “Annotation Edit”.
Any subtitle edit you apply in Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro or Annotation Edit can be exchanged.
So changes can be done at any state of the workflow and can be reused in any application.
Even MS Excel XML is being imported.timebased metadata
