  • Capturing HDV from footage from a Sony Z1U

    Hi all.
I’m editing a video that uses mostly DV footage (I’m cutting on a 720×480 timeline), and have some b-roll that was shot in HDV on a Z1U. I am currently capturing from the Z1U, and wondered if there is any way to do an “instant downconvert” from HDV to DV during capture instead of having to dub the footage down a DV tape first before bringing it into FCP. Also, whatever HDV footage I already have captured, what do you suggest I do to downconvert that so I can drop it into my 720×480 timeline?

Thx in advance for your help.

The Z1 does downconvert to DV in camera and outputs via firewire. It needs setting in the Z1 menus to downconvert.

Works really well too. From now on that is my camera of choice for ease of use and great pictures.

I figured out how to do it via the i-link downconvert setting on the Z1U, and then having to select “DV NTSC” in FCP. That gets me DV footage when I capture. Great. Now…what about converting to DV what I already have captured on HDV…how to set that up in Compressor…

    Any thoughts?
    Thx

Look in the Advanced settings. All your Easy Setups are there.

How much footage are you talking about? Maybe it would be easier and faster to recapture it with the Z1 doing the conversion.

Well, I tried using the “DV NTSC” Advanced Format Conversion, and what I’m unable to do is get Compressor to not zoom in on the footage and leave my edges alone. I’m not sure how to set that up in Compressor. And I’m finding that not only does Compressor crop the edges, but the video looks anamorphically squeezed as well, regardless fo what pixel aspect ratio I tried (and I basically tried them all). It would be nice to have this figured out, in case I ever get pre-captured HDV footage that I have to work into a DV timeline in FCP.

    Thx

You really need to recapture this footage using the DV Easy Setup. This is the best option for your needs. Compressor doesn’t do the center punch option without having to change its setup.

I would strongly suggest that you recapture all of your HDV to DV.
