Workflow for mixing SD and HD in FCP 5.1.3
I’m a Media100 HD editor who is about to start my first documentary project in FCP HD. This facility’s system only has firewire and the i/o. We have Rorke HDX arrays that could handle HD footage, but for reasons I’ll outline below, I’m thinking of just working in SD DV.
The footage for this project is a mix of SD BetaSP and 3/4″ which I will be digitizing in via a Media100i system and then importing into FCP. The other half of the footage is DVCProHD 720p24, which I will be digitizing via firewire from an AJ 1200A which we’ll be renting.
The deliverable for this project is going to be SD DVD, and a timeline that could be reacquired to HD in FCP or brought into an Avid Adrenaline via Automatic Duck at a later date for an HD online if the producers need an HD broadcast master.
So, I’m assuming what I’ll need to is set the 1200A to downcovert the HD and output a SD DV signal out of the firwire, digitize into FCP as NTSC DV, and work with an anamorphic SD DV/DVCPro timeline. All of the Media100 codec stuff will need to be resized, cropped & rendered to fit the 16:9 frame, and the downconverted HD stuff will play natively in this timeline.
For those of you who have worked in mixed formats in FCP before, does this sound like the right workflow to you? What red flags do I need to watch out for, especially w/r/t the differing frame rates, mixing the 29.97 and the 24? And how easy is it to reconform/redigitize an SD timeline to HD in FCP?

I have done this, but not the way you are describing. I would never capture footage with another edit system to use in FCP. That is asking for trouble. But I am not familiar with how the Media 100 captures, what the format is, or if those files would even work with FCP.

We cut DVCPRO HD and added the other footage when needed, resizing and adjusting the picture. We did this for the offline. When we did the online, we…well, read the link. We used a Terranex box to up convert the footage. If we had a Kona 3 card, we could have done it in house, but what we did worked out rather well.
