Compression/Quicktime Conversion Problems
I just need to convert my .fcp file to a movie file so that I can burn it to DVD. Compressor starts working for about 15% then FCP freezes. As far as QuickTime is concerned, it almost instantly shows a “I/O File Error”. Is there any way to make FCP stop freezing, or get QuickTime to work? I use a powerbook G4.

Sounds like you have a corrupt file in your timeline.
I’d start with deleting all of your render files using the Render Manager. If that still doesn’t do it, you might just need to redigitize your footage because it would mostly likely be a corrupt video file. And when you get done, just export your timeline using your sequence settings to Quicktime and then use Compressor to compress your video to DVD.

Does re-digitize mean I need to recapture all my footage? Is there an easy way to tell which files are corrupted? Is there an easier way than essenially starting over?

Take a look at the timeline media round about 15% in, using QuickTime Player to directly open your hard drive movie files.
When I had a similar error I found a couple of dodgy unopenable movie files, which had to be recaptured to restore the project’s functionality. -

The only option you have is to figure out where the crash is occuring and then use Quicktime to open the files manually until you find one that is corrupt (probably it will show up as a white screen). Once you find this file, you’ll have to delete it manually and then recapture in FCP. Hopefully, you only have one file that is corrupt.
My eariler suggestion is recapture all of your footage IF you only have a few tapes to deal with. Most of the time when I have had corrupt footage, it was usually more than one clip and searching manually could take more time than just recapturing all of my footage.
Sometimes you get lucky… sometimes you don’t.
