    Let’s say I’m on 5.1.4 at the moment – am I to understand that if I run that dmg, it will pull me back to 5.1.2?

    No, you need to De-install FCP, re-install FCP 5.1, then run the updater.

    No I think you’ll have to uninstall, install 5.1 or 5.1.1 and then use the 5.1.2 installer to update. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think you can use an installer to step backwards, only forwards.
