so it looks like we are going to go with XDCAM HD as our new aquisition format.

it all looks and sounds great. just a few post questions for those using the format.

how are you monitoring your edits…i assume that as it’s Mpeg Long GOP, FCP can’t output to my broadcast monitor as per the limitations it has with HDV?
using an AJA Kona LH will that allow me the downconverted HD signal to my SD monitor?

[paulos] “using an AJA Kona LH will that allow me the downconverted HD signal to my SD monitor?”

Yeah…. That will work just fine. But, let me ask you a question. Why don’t you look into purchasing an HD monitor. Panasonic makes the BT-LH1700 for around $3000 and the BT-LH2600 for around $5000. If you’re going to upgrade you cameras, you might as well upgrade your monitoring setup. It will make all the difference in the world. I understand budget constraints but this is one where you shouldn’t say “I’ll do it later”, this could bite you in the butt.
HD color space is different from SD color space.

[Wayne Carey] “HD color space is different from SD color space.”

Very different. If your final delivery is HD at any point, you do NOT want to color correct on an SD monitor.

I second and third everything said! one other usefull bit of kit for working with XDCAM HD is the Matrox MXO, which enables critical monitoring of your HD sequence direct to a qualified LCD display (ACD 23″, Dell 20″/24″ etc) and also provides an HD SDI output or SD SDI downconvert … and not least of all, allows you to output without the length conform process.

    hope it helps

yeah totally understand about the HD monitor, I was just making sure that this would actually work. I need things up and running straight away unless the intial budget doesnt stretch to a new HD monitor from the outset. I would likely be looking at the JVC 1710 CRT at the moment as I’m not 100% convinced on LCD yet.

    thanks

The only CRT I would recommend are the Sony PVML5 series if you can find them. You’ll have to buy them used unless you want to go with the PVM14L5/1 which they still have at B&H Photo (www.bhphoto.com). They are the ONLY place that still has them new as they purchased the entire lot when Sony ceased production of them. Actually I’m not even sure if they’re still in stock.

As for LCD, the Panasonic 1700W and 2600W are both outstanding as are the Panasonic Pro Plasma HD screens.

the JVC is quite a nice monitor actually, a little on the smaller side than i’m used too, but certianly does the job and fits in with our budget….I’m sure the other monitors are great – being in the UK, B&H is not that much use as all imports get wacked with import duty and VAT blowing out the price significantly.
