FCP HD Studio and FCP HD 4.5 the same no?
I digitzed some HD footage off a 1200a deck usinf DVCPROHDp24 codec on a G5 runninng FCP HD Studio. The audio went in and plays fine. I brought home to y system iusing FCP HD 4.5 and my audio doesn’t show up. Not even a waveform on the clip. It plays fine in Quicktime and in AE 7 but no audio in FCP. I know projects can’t go backwards and open up but why won’t a movie. Does anyone have an answer to this? Please help. Thanks, Randy

The way the program encodes the clip can differ. There could be improvements to the codec that were implimented in later versions the earlier versions to not have, and therefore cannot play.

FCP 4.5 was the first one called FCP HD, but the box to FCP 5 Studio also just says HD on the outside so you may have captured in FCP 5. Only way to know is to look at the splash screen when FCP starts up or do a Get Info on the application.

Sounds like your 4.5 has Quicktime 6 installed not Quicktime 7. The main difference is the audio. Install QT7 on your 4.5 machine and you should read the audio correctly. Better still upgrade your 4.5 to 5

Which brings us to the bottom line. FCP 4.5 cannot play DVCProHD format. It’s specs are for QT 6 as well. So whatever version it was digitized in (most likely FCP 5, which does not have the HD moniker, only 4.5 does) it can’t be used in 4.5 correctly if at all.

Incorrect. The reason FCP got the HD moniker at that stage is because that was the version that first was able to capture DVCRO HD via firewire.
But, there are differences in the DVCPRO HD formats as the versions of FCP progressed…I gather. Because of the fact that DVCPRO HD captured on later versions have issues when people try to use them in earlier versions.

that’s incorrect. We delivered the first 12 episodes of Good Eats in HD using FCP 4.5. We capture / master to the DVCPro HD format.
