In the New York Times today, it is reported that Sony will withdraw their editing workstations and later offer a software only thing.

I’ve got an idea for an April fools joke… two months early…

If a tree falls in the woods and a Sony editing workstation does the same, will anyone hear it?

And how about this, Adobe goes the other way and offers a new editing workstation with some kind of proprietary something and Primer is thrown in for free!

Doesn’t surprise me really, the only people I know who were still using the Xpri have been converting them over to FCP / Kona workstations. I’m pretty certain the software only system will be PC based only since PC’s are part of their product line.

[Dave LaRonde] “Frankly, I’m laughing quietly to myself about this.

For a few decades, Sony was the 800-pound gorilla among broadcast equipment manufacturers. They pretty much always had the best gear, and instead of pricing it competitively, you paid through the nose for it.

I’m glad that their editing workstation went bust. It’s about time those guys got a reality check forced on them.”

I’ll second the motion and I’m really glad to see how well the whole Panasonic DVCPro HD format took off. That really brought another manufacturer to the forefront of HD broadcast.

    hey

i recall hearing that support for the xpri was killed about a year ago. no new software, no upgrades etc

sony has done this ad nauseuam, brought out turnkey nle’s only to let them languish and fade away.

there was some models around when DVcam was introduced. the ES3 adn ES7, big whoop being 4x capture via proprietary SDI. dont see them anywhere do ya?

why dont they stick to waht they do best? cameras, tape machines, monitors switchers, and microphones and stay out of the overnight obsolescence realm of computers and capture cards ie the people they need to play along with the nicest!

    my 2.5 cents

They will put all their eggs in the Sony Vegas basket, and do a major upgrade (Studio-like) with the other programs inherited from Sound Forge. With an Aja Xena card, Vegas actually performs quite well!
