  A Mystery – Wacky Resolution Change?

  Hi,

  I have a weird problem – that doesn’t make any sense (to me anyway).

  We’re editing a music vid at the moment and we’re doing a ‘rough composite’ of green screen footage over photo images. Later, we’ll import the timeline in After Effects to finish.

  So, when we import images into Final Cut and put them on the timeline, no matter how big the original image is it always ‘fits inside’ the dimensions of the project’s settings. By that, I mean if the project settings are 1080 x 1440 and we import an image that is (say) 3000 x 7000 it will shrink down so it is only 1080 high (fits inside).

  The problem: If we then resize it to the size it’s supposed to be, it loses it’s resolution. The quality looks crap. Well, today it does.
  That’s the weird thing. Yesterday, resizing a high-rez image from its ‘fit inside’ size to it’s original size didn’t degrade the quality. But… TODAY… (Lord knows why) I can take the same image and place it on the Timeline, resize it and the quality is crap-o-la!

  Right now, I’m looking at yesterday’s image and todays’. They both are the same image from the same source, they both have exactly the same resizing done to them but one is crisp and clear and the other is blurred and indistinct.

  Can anyone explain this?

  Would love an explanation, as every image I now try to resize behaves in the same way.

  PS – The reason we want these big images is to do panning and ‘craning’ to match the action of our green screen shots eg. someone flying from the ground to the top of a building.

  That’s how FCP works. It will Scale / Distort an image to fit into the Sequence Settings when you import. You simply right click the clip and choose “Remove Attributes” in the timeline and it will re-size itself.

  If your timeline is set to Dynamic resolution, this is normal. Render it and it will come back to full resolution.
