  • [Missing] Firewire + immediate crash when opening Log & Capture

Hello, glad to meet the cow…

We have a problem with our Final Cut pro 5.1 system (Academic).

We were not able to activate our Log & Capture function – in the recent past, whenever we tried to open this window to log & capture, FCP would crash right off the screen !

Yesterday, we cleared all past FCP files off of our drive and reinstalled our 5.1 program, yet the problem persists – Pull down the Log & Capture window and watch the program disappear…

Plus we now hsve a new wrinkle: when we open FCP, the External A/V device window pops up, saying that it is Unable to locate the Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480).

Effectively, in our Audio/Video Settings, the Video Playback entry says: [Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480).

What makes this conundrum especially intriguing is that we are able to access our playbeck deck via the same firewire, cabled to the same computer, if we are working in iMovie…

Am I justified in locating this problem in our Final Cut Pro program ? The hardware seems to check out in functioning in iMovie. Perhaps with your advice, we just need to reset a particular setting.

There might also be a kink in how our FCP program is functioning with our computer; installing our program on another computer in our office might prove or disprove that possibility.

Your astute assistance is much desired and appreciated. Thank-you, Kate Sims

    Kate,

Tough to tell what’s cooking with your system, but a full virgin OS install and a full FCP istall will certainly cure the problem.

BTW, the error message about not find the firewire device is very common. It happens all the time, especially when you don’t have your VCR powered on when you start up FCP.

    Hi,

When you uninstalled final cut did you also delete the preference files? That may cure it. Also try booting it up without the camera plugged via firewire. Then once the app is running try attaching it.

I’m not sure about exactly but I think the preference files are in ‘user/library/preference/Final Cut Pro User Data’.

    grafx that flow!

l am getting the same problem. when l open FCP 5.1.2 l get a message that no firewire device detected and a instant crash when l open log and capture. l am using QuickTime Pro 7.1.3 and have tryed capture through that but it also says it cant detect a deck or camera. So l also tryed to capture through iMovie and had no problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated or if the writer of the previous message solved her problem could let me know how – many thanks Peter Lewis
