FCP and Avid Media Composer/Xpress Pro w MOJO
I’m thinking of aadding an avid component to my setup….will FCP and either of the above mentioned programs live well together on my G5 or do I need to choose one or the other/

they both run.. im doing it.. i was was very pro avid .. but i cant afford their hd hardware.. now its a pain to jump back and forth so im using fcp. to answer your question they both run… fcp/decklink axp/mojo

From other posts on this forum, it appears that your best bet is to create two complete partitions on your system as FCP 5.1.2 has issues with Avid quicktime components.

For the moment, both current versions coexist on the same machine. Sometimes that isn’t true, because an OS update might break something on the Avid software, until Avid catches up and posts a fix. There is currently a conflict with FCP 5.1.2 related to some sort codec issue. Some folks reported the conflict with BMD codecs and others with Avid. In my case I had to uninstall the Avid QT codecs before FCP would launch. These codecs aren’t necessary for Avid operation, but are used if you want to render AE files, for example, in an Avid codec. Other than that (for now) it works.

Install it on another partition. That’s the best way to go. Avid is always a bit late adapting to new QT and OS updates (not their fault, they just don’t get advance notice).
But if you install on another partition, it works fine.

You said this is in a G5, correct? SImply add another internal hard drive to your G5 and install another copy of OSX on it. Then install either Avid only or FCP only on that drive. When you need to switch back and forth, simply open the startup disk preference, choose the other drive and reboot.

2 More notes to what Jeremy said:
1) You can hold down the ‘Option’ key while re-starting the computer to switch between partitions.
2) Although having 2 drives is best, if you really want to you can erase your current startup disc and partition it as 2 halves and use those. I’d go with the 2-drive method myself, but it’s an option if you need it.

Apple doesn’t make hard drives. Get yourself a SATA drive from NewEgg. You can get as little or as big a drive as you want. http://www.newegg.com
