Firewire connectivity issues on Intel Mac

Running FCP 5.1.2 on the new intel mac. OS 10.4.8
We’re having 2 problems:
1) Using an external firewire disk with an oxford chipset – this seems to lose connectivity frequently and is very temperamental on starting up.
2) Capture and playout to a sony dv camera or deck (we have all models) via firewire is unreliable.
We need to shut down, power up, toggle settings…just to get it going.
Preview is often shown as disabled for capture and playing out to tape is a bigger problem with no signal coming up. or only audio.
Apparently this firewire issue is a problem with other users?

Don’t know about those articles but we have zero issues with firewire connectivity here with our Mac Pro Quad 3.0. I have Firewire drives that are 4 years old that connect right up when I use them. For decks we have the Sony M15U HDV and the Panasonic AJ-HD1200A running through a Firewire Hub along with an AJA Io LA and we don’t have any issues with any of those.
Always make sure your Camera / Deck is turned on before you launch FCP.
As for older drives, make sure they’re cleaned and not severely fragmented. I clean my drives after every project or at least every three months when possible.

we use the hdv m15 as well.
this is not normal is all i can say…thanks
