please help w/ DVCPro HD to DV offline/online workflow
I’m trying to make DV25 copies of some DVC Pro HD files in a project so a friend can make an offline edit. I know to use the media manager, keep the same frame rate, and use the existing name as this makes reconnecting the media much easier later. What’s confusing me now is that when I make the DV copies and open them in a DV timeline, they are smaller than they should be, resized to 75%. Their aspect ratio has also been switched to -50, though I tested and found -34 matched the original HD clips. So what I was wondering was: 1- is there some custom setting I should use so the offline clips will open full size and the correct aspect ratio in their timeline, & 2- if I were to use such a setting would it mess up the HD clips when I reconnect them? Thanks ahead of time for any help!

Choose dv NTSC anamorphic when recompressing and make sure to edit the footage in a dv anamorphic timeline. You might have to make a custom preset depending on your frame rate.

Thanks for the help. I tried what you said but still ran into some problems. The files opened at 75% of their size again (anamorphic render in an anamorphic timeline) and at -12.5 aspect ratio. Tried a few different options as far as resizing in Dv timelines or HD timelines and reconnecting options. The easiest way so far seems to be to resize to 100% and adjust to 0 the aspect ratio in the DV time time, do your edit, reconnect to the HD clips, copy the entire timeline, paste the timeline in an HD timeline, then adjust only the aspect ratio there. If you do it that way, you don’t have to adjust the size in the HD timeline and everything looks right in the DV timeline. For some reason the aspect ratio in the HD timeline gets set to 12.5 this way, but it’s easier to deal with that than the sizing and that.
Still, isn’t there a better way to do this? I have to think there’s a more streamlined method or setting. -

I just selected one clip and then opened MEDIA MANAGER.
Chose the RECOMPRESS option. Chose DV/NTSC 23.98 as the compressor (since I am working with 24p material)
UNCHECKED include master clips
UNCHEcKED Delete unused media
Checked DUPLICATE selected clip and place into new project.
Unchecked include nonactive multiclip angles.Chose my destination and let it go. I got a clip and a project. Then I used my EASY SETUP option and choose DV/NTSC 23.98 (24p) and created a new sequence.
All was good.

Shane has graciously outlines the steps for you. Try what he says and that will work. This is what I meant by recompress.

Thanks, y’all! The only thing that I can see that I did differently than Shane was to deselect the DUPLICATE selected clip and place into new project option. That left “Include master clips outside selection”, “Include affiliate clips outside selection”, & Include nonactive multiclip angles” all with a check but greyed out.
But have tried keeping the settings as you said, Shane. Tried it NTSC DV and NTSC DV anamorphic. Both had the same kind of sizing and aspect ratio issues. What I do is copy the clips I recompressed in the media manager, then paste them in a NTSC DV and NTSC DV anamorphic timeline. Somehow, somewhere along the lines something is getting messed up. Is it me or a software glitch? -

Sorry, I copy them from the original timeline, i.e. the timeline from where I selected them and sent them to the Media Manager. In this case it’s the DVCPro HD timeline.
All I’m doing right now is selecting a few clips from the timeline and using them as a test for this process. I know you can select the entire sequence from the Browser, but that would take too long to recompress as I’m only trying to test this workflow. -
Dude, that’s your problem. If you are copying the footage from the HD timeline and pasting them into a dv timeline, of course they are going to be screwed up…right?
Do me a favor, duplicate your current full HD sequence, delete everything except two or three hd clips, then do the media manager recompress workflow that Shane laid out for you ON THAT SEQUENCE (right click (or control click) the sequence and choose the media manager). DO the steps that shane said, then open the newly created sequence in the newly created project.

Okay, thanks. I think that worked. The DV clips look fine if recompressed from a sequence as anamorphic. To me it gets very confusing though as you end up with new projects and new sequences that have the same name as sequences in your other project. Plus they all end up together in your Browser and Timeline and I have a heck of time figuring out which one is which with out clicking and checking their item properties.
Anyway, I think I figured out how to go back to the online HD clips. You select the sequence and use the media manager to make an offline version of it. Then you open up the new sequence (again the same name) in the new project and right click the clips and direct FCP towards where the HD clips are.
This does seem to work but I wish there was a way to do it with out all these new projects and sequences witht he same name that have to be renamed.

As long as you keep the projects separate, you are all good. When you are done offlining, the offline editor will export an xml of the final timeline, you then bring that back into your HD project with the proper HD settings and then reconnect the media, or use the media manager like you have stated.
unfortunately, this is the way that FCP works. It’s kind of inelegant, but once you ‘get’ the workflow process it’s pretty accessible actually.
