    Hello All,

We just got our new Mac Pro.

I read the article on how to get AE 7 to run….but with no luck.

It will not even open….so how can I lower the ram usage?

    Mac Pro 3ghz
    4GB ram
    4 750GB HD
    4500 graphics card

So how do I even get it to open once? Or how do I lower the ram usage without the program opening?

    THANK YOU,
    Jason

You have some other problem. Lowering the ram used will aid in rendering issues. AE should open (and has for me) with the default settings. Delete all the AE files and re-install is the only advice I can offer.

    Hi,

I’m just curious, did you migrate the system’s files from an older Mac? I made the boo-boo of using Apple’s “handy” Migration Assistant when I got my new Mac Pro, and had problems with lots of apps. I finally had to format the drive and do a fresh install.

If anything came from an older Mac, you may wish to delete everything Adobe-related and re-install. Wouldn’t hurt to do regular maintenance stuff like repairing permissions, deleting system caches (try Tiger Cache Cleaner), etc. Also, don’t rule out bad RAM, or another hardware conflict.

Also, have you checked the Console log? This is available in your Applications/Utilities folder. When a program crashes, information relating to the crash is written to this log. Try clearing the Console, and then running AE— see what pops up.

Please check back in with more detail, especially the Console information.

    Hope this helps,
    Graham Jones.

i have the same system with the same amount of ram and had no problems running ae7. there is an update for ae on adobe (7.0.1 i think) you could try that… i had run the update before running ae7.

make sure the ram was installed correctly, the macpro interleaves its ram, if its not installed correctly in matching pairs (same size, speed, manufacturer) it can lead to problems, ususally system crashes though.

if you reinstall, reboot first in safe boot mode (hold shift during boot) then install. you may also want to run the hardware test on the os x install disc, this can tell you if you have bad ram or another problem (hold the ‘d’ key down when you boot from the disc to bring up the hardware test).

you said you had 4 750 hds are they all internal? and are they all a striped raid? i would recomend having one drive as your os and application drive, then the other 3 can be striped.

are there any other particulars of your system pci cards, third party ae plugins, etc.?

Nope I did a clean install of everything 🙁

The only program that does not work is AE 7.

Nothing shows up in the log either????

The icon starts to bounce than it stops and….nothing.

I see the Aftereffects name in the top bar then it’s gone.

    All internal HD’s.

Could there be a conflict with some other software????

    Weird!

possibly… this could take a while to troubleshoot.

a few other things: have you repaired permissions recently? generally it good practice to repair permisions before and after any install, particularly system updates (use the disk utility app, select first aid and the drive)… it’s also recommended to download the combined os x updates, rather than the automatic software update method. i don’t know if any of these may be contributing to your problems.

i think i’d start with the hardware test off the os x install disc, run the extended test. if all is good, i’d safeboot, repair permissions, reinstall ae7 and install the update to 7.0.1. repair permissions again and try ae. if that doesn’t work, you may be looking at re-seating the ram, re-installing the os, reconfiguring the hard drive array… before i did all that i think i’d call adobe, then apple to see what they say.
