  • iMac 2.0Ghz Core Duo Intel…. suitable for FCP 5.1?

Just a question, I’m thinking of purchasing a 2GHz Core Duo iMac with 128MB of VRAM… Just wondering if RT effects in FCP are doable? I don’t mind going for a MacPro Workstation, but I already have an intense Avid one, and need to familiarize myself with FCP. I do hate Rendering times though, so as long as I can preview the timeline and simple effects in real-time… I’m Ok.

    Any thoughts?

    What kind of footage?

If it’s DV or HDV and you get an external firewire drive you should be fine. (Or firewire 800 if you’re getting the 24″ model.)

If it’s something other than those formats, well digitizing will be your biggest problem. Let us know if you’re trying to do something else, but for DV work I haven’t had any problems. (2 gigs of system RAM is not a bad idea either!)

if you are going to be working with DV, the imac is great! I work on a dual 2.7 G5 at work, but I have a 2.16Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2 GB ram at home. It is great! for DV, render times are very impressive. I would, however, recommend upgrading the graphics card to the 256 chip. You will notice much better results if you plan on using motion.

So I can definitely do timeline previews in real-time? Along with simple transitions and effects?

I have a 500GB external hard drive, and yes, I intend to upgrade the RAM as well.
