    Vince,

Whatever you decide to do, don’t do it until after MacWorld where some model upgrades might be announced.

Well the question is: is your current setup working for you? If it is and you’re making money then why bother? Is there a job coming up that you think you won’t be able to do without upgrading? Get more storage if you need it but from your setup I don’t think you’re going to see much of a performance increase. And sometime in the future when new versions of the software come out and require more of the computer you’ll be thinking you’re out of date and wish you’d waited. From what you’ve described your work to be I’d say an old dual G4 would probably suffice!! Save your money and drink beer :))

    I agree 100%,

More than likely apple will be releasing a dual quad core system.

    Rob,

The current set-up has really been fine. I do now need to be able to get from the component of and HDV deck into FCP. I also need to add a 2nd client monitor. Neither of which are possible with my Decklink card. My research on these boards has me convinced that the Kona Lh card will deliver the best picture as well as the I/O options I need. I hate to spend money on a card that won’t work when I do switch to Mac Pro. That’s really the source of my hesitance to upgrade. I also think my current system has good resale value now.

    Thanks,

    Vince

Have you looked at the Decklink Extreme HD? That’ll get you component in as well.

Yes Steve i have. but again, it would require a Mac Pro as it is PCIe and my current system is not.

    thanks

Vince, If just the second monitor is needed for now, couldn’t you loop through the monitor you’re using now? Oe perhaps drive another monitor off of the video out of your deck?

    Richard

PS: Liked your reel, pretty funny.

With the 500 and 750 gb sata drives and the 4 bays in the new machines the issue of storage has made a significant turn and what was once an added cost for external storage is now part of the price we are paying for a new machine for most of us. The ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB graphics card has better performance for another $250.00 and more and more software takes advantage of the extra power. Bare Feats.
As Peter pointed out, wait for macworld.

Me, I’m a bit of a minimalist and am making do with my dual 2ghz g5 with kona2. It’s my contribution to Kyoto. It’s often tempting to keep up with the latest gizmos but there is a cost on the enviroment to all this consumerism. Frieghter loads of hazardous old computer bits are being smuggled into 3rd world countries for disposal these days if you’ve seen any of these news documentaries. Guys like Walter here on this forum are quite justified in keeping abreast of cutting edge tech and I’m not trying to catagorize you or anyone but people like myself (one man band who wears many hats) can get by with the bare neccessities as we are often not on the same types of time pressures as the full time editors. I just wanted to shed some light on that issue and hope we all consider these things when purchasing things.
