  Best way to crop/letterbox for web

  Hi all. I have a FCP self-contained 720×480 (4:3) video file that was letterboxed (it’s not anamorphic). In Compressor, I replicated a “QT downloadable” (H.264) preset, and tried to crop the file for the web, by cropping 63 points, top and bottom…but Compressor keeps failing. Anything I haven’t checkmarked? I am missing something?

  Open the movie in Compressor, then crop it in the Geometry tab as you’ve been doing… then contrain the display to 16:9 and choose NTSC CCIR 601/DV as the pixel aspect ratio… this should work. You’l see your work in the Preview Monitor in Compressor before the export…

  …thanks, i’m pretty sure this will work now….especially since, after I realized what made the batch monitor fail, I was still dissatisfied, since I kept getting “squeezed” quicktimes. But now I know why…I was setting the output to a “4:3 ratio” as opposed to a 16:9 ratio (what the file was cropped to emulate). This new data makes total sense…preview monitor in compressor tells me I’m going to get what I need now…THX!!
