Color Correction: Plug-in for applying CURVES and LEVELS in final cut?
anyone know of a plug-in for FCP (I don’t believe there is an existing function) that allows you to either (a) design and apply curves possibly even in individual RGB channels as an effect to video elements or (b) similar but with a histogram and level function, both which are standard and two most popular photographic color correction techniques on still images. The 3 way color wheel is a very simple approximation of a a process that can be more delicately and intuitively (i guess for those who are used to Curves) rendered.

There is a Levels Filter in FCP which I use as part of Color Correction.
Sythetic Aperture has a nice plug-in for FCP that I believe you can try for free.

thanks guys. we’ve tried both these plug-ins. both of them and the fcp have actions called CURVES or LEVELS but they all are simplified attempts with single or a few sliders as opposed to the ability to design and apply user-specified curves matching the specific needs to adjust data in the histogram, video tonal info and look and feel on the screen. if anyone is familiar with how curves and levels are used in photoshop (on still images).
the way the function works in photoshop (for example) is a histogram is viewed (like in viewscopes which does exist in fcp) and either a blank curve or a histogram with range handle is presented by the plug-in and the user can manipulate directly either the shape of the curve (in a pen tool way – think keyframes) or the in-out-inflexion of the levels precisely to adjust. Once you get the hang of it it is way more intuitive and powerful and simple that the flat single/multiple slider solution which butchers and crushes blacks and highlights with little discretion.

Hmm not even Final Touch does that (curves/smoothstep interface is limited like in FCP; the other curves do something else).
Color Finesse and After Effects both have curves like what you describe. After Effects is very photoshop-like in that many photoshop filters and features can be found in AE.

I believe that Conduit, the new node-based compositing plugin for Final Cut Pro, has a curves node that may function in the way that you need.

The tool you really want to use is Final Touch HD which Apple has just purchased from Silicon Color. BUT, it works so badly at this point that we have put it on the shelf and are waiting to see how Apple addresses all the issues with the software at NAB. Only beta copies are available of it at the moment as Apple has halted all sales.
Short of that Color Finesse from Sythetic Aperature is the best CC tool out there for FCP. It doea have a histogram and curves.

If you choose the Color Corrector filter, you can drag the bars of Blacks, Whites, and Midtones to estimate the level changes. That is what I use and it works pretty well.
