  Unable to export still image of HDV project

  Hi:

  I am trying to export a still image from an hdv documentary I’m editing in fcp 5.1.2. For some reason, even though I position the playhead on the exact frame I want exported, the image that is exported isn’t the frame I selected, but is several frames away. I am able to select other frames and export them successfully, but not the frame I want.

  Is this problem unique to hdv? I’ve been using QT conversion. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

  It’s something to consider. I’ve never edited HDV but I do know that this codec uses a 15 frame GOP (9 frame GOP for Canon footage). Is the still that gets exported about 15 frames away from the one you selected? You might have to conform the footage first before you’re able to capture the exact frame you’re after. This is just a guess.

  Hi Don:
  I thought the GOP might be the culprit (but I guess I should avoid politics). I haven’t been able to exactly determine the number of frames it drifts. Some frames are very blurry, others clear. I will try your idea of conforming. How do I conform a short segment? I know “conforming to HDV” happens automatically when I try to print to tape, but I don’t know how to do it otherwise.

  Okay, I did a test. I selected a short segment for printing to tape. The segment was conformed automatically, then I hit escape and exported a frame using QT conversion. Same problem–the frame that was exported was not the frame I selected.

  I know this is probably not the best way to conform (indeed, perhaps the segment was no longer conformed once I hit escape) but I thought I’d give it a try.

  Any suggestions appreciated.

  Brian- Make a freeze frame (modify menu) and export a frame from that. Remember it will be 1440 pixels wide so take it into photoshop and resize to 1920 and if you have interlacing artifacts use the video filter ‘deinterlace’.
