sequence settings that support alpha channels
Posted by Paul Waide on December 6, 2006 at 5:44 pmDoes the DVCpro 50 codec support alpha channels? I’m tring to inmport a Jumpbacks animation and it’s not working., am i doing something wrong? If not what codecs in final cut do support alpha channels, since we use quite a few i’d like to eliminate the endless rendering of using animation codec and then rerendering each one?
Thanks

No.

None. There are no codecs that support alpha channels in real time at present. The old Cinewave card did support Animation files with alpha in realtime, but did so with additonal processing on their card. It is possible that the next generation of computers (and software) will be sufficiently fast enough to support this using CPU horsepower or GPU horsepower.

December 6, 2006 at 6:59 pmwow, is final cut really the high powered machine everyone says, or is it a juiced up DV editor??? my 5 year old affinity does 2 layers with alpha and grfx in real time…. What’s the best workflow or workaround to minimize rendering? We’re doing a 20 minute show with many animated lower 3rds and overlay graphics.

December 7, 2006 at 6:21 pmThe problem isn’t the application. Nor is it the Mac. It’s the DV part. Proprietary cards like Kona and such ($$$) add tons of realtime functionality but, yeah, it’s a bummer.
I have never used either of those other nle machines but our old Media required hardware codec support to do realtime keying and alpha compositing. Are your other machines using a proprietary codec?
The drawbacks of using a non-proprietary, format agnostic platform like FCP are diminished by the cool stuff it can do but it takes time to make yourself happy with the decision to go FCP if you purchased without knowing what you were getting. You eventually learn to live with the necessity to render by learning how to use Quickview and lower rez RT.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
