well, after trying a few things, and getting a few ideas from you guys, it looks like the original plan is the best option here. the book re-affirms this. unless i’m missing something, the best way to share the highest quality clips via DVD to be used by other people on other platforms seems to be the Export/QT movie/(keep current settings, do not recompress, and check “make movie self-contained”). on the surface, this seemed like the way to go, but even these files were not playing back so smoothly on my PC (but looked great on the Mac!). the book confirms that doing it in this manner (when some editing has been done on the FCP timeline), will NOT recompress the file at all and will be usable on other platforms.

you all probably knew all this before, but just throwing it out there for anyone who might have been needing to try some options.

also, Exporting using the “QT conversion” ALWAYS recompresses the frames (and it played back TERRIBLY on my PC). by the way, i’ve already told my family that the PC we have is the last one we will ever buy. when it is time to upgrade/replace that one, it will be an all-Mac household for this puppy!

Are you copying the files to the PC hard drive and then opening them within a video editing program? They’re not going to play off the DVD itself, and I wouldn’t expect them to playback in Quicktime perfectly either.
