  • Firewire DVCPROHD output- where did I go wrong?

I have stock footage that came in on DVD- I used MPEG streamclip to rip the DVDs and create 720p DVCPROHD clips to incorporate into our 23.98 HD timeline, amidst hours of Varicam footage. These look great.
We decided we wanted timecode-accurate tape backups of these upconverted files. So I am using the 1200A with firewire to create these tapes. I blacked the first minute of tape and did an assemble edit, with the correct inpoint, etc. as I have done many times, but going back to spot check certain frames, single frame landmarks such as blinks, etc. I have found that it is way off- 2 or more seconds, about 30 mins into the tape. Where did I go wrong?

I set the TC in the 1200A- setting it to ‘preset’ for the black/code and set the starting TC in menu item #530, and then set TC mode back to ‘regen’ for the assmble edit.

    thanks in advance,
    Allan

The 1200A is not frame accurate in the sense that it will not start on the frame you are editing to. If you set your in point for 00:59:00:00 on the deck, it will be off as much as 20 frames. That’s the nature of this deck. It takes LOTs of trial and error to work out the formula where you can make a frame accurate master on that deck.

Ouch. So then…. maybe i will just print to video, and in final cut Modify>starting timecode to match what ends up on tape, to have a TC matching set of file and backup tape? Does that seem absurd?

Since you aren’t ouputting a show master to tape, but rather footage that you will later capture, then getting spot on code on your initial output doesn’t really matter. You can simply press record and then play the timeline and you should be able to record the footage. Then the code associated with the footage is the code on the tape, not the timeline code.

    Get my meaning?

I do get your meaning, but our purpose was to have a tape backup that we could recapture from if the drive went down, so the TC does have to match.
