  • Need DVC-PRO HD 720P Codec for AE

I’ve been told over and over again that this codec does not exist for AE, but I’m not convinced that Panasonic and Apple would actually prevent us from viewing or manipulating footage from the HVX.

We’ve already finished the cut on FCP-HD, and have exported an original full-res clip for image stabilization in AE. Whether viewing in AE or in QT Pro, it’s just a white screen. That’s of course becasue we don’t have the codec.

Speaking with Jeff at Panasonic, he says the codec is only available through licensed companies, and Adobe is not one of them, therefore there is no support for the media.

Is this true? Can one not work with DVC-PRO HD media in AE? Or can anyone link me to the codec?

I’m astounded that this is so difficult to get.

    Thanks!

    Jim

It’s a Quicktime codec, not an AE codec. 🙂 If you have it for use on FCP, you have it for use on AE. If you captured from P2 within FCP and converted to QT as part of the capture process, you should be able to work with the files in any QT app.

What were your sequence settings? (specifically, which codec?)
You say you finished the cut — to which codec did you export from FCP?

    Hi Steve,

Right. What we’re looking for is a Quicktime Codec. Sorry I wasn’t clear about that, I was using shorthand and trying to be brief. We need a QT codec for use in AE.

According to the editor, we edited and exported same-as-source: DVC-PRO HD 720P60i.

We’re working on a box that does not have FCP-HD. Is it possible to extract the codec from FCP-HD and use it on another computer?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jim,

We have the HVX and we send stuff to AE a lot. AE should see the P2 Footage with no prob… Unless your AE is on a PC and you’re sending footage from a MAC.

A quick solution is to just Export your shots that need stabilized as a QTMOV(using a PNG Codec, since it’s lossless) and render out of AE with the same QTMOV (PNG Codec).

But be careful importing HD footage from FCP to AE. I have posted an issue that you might run into.

Buy Raylight to convert your MXF files to raylight avis.
I edit in Premiere but actually use AE for alot of my file conversions because I can batch render them.

Raylight can be found here. I bought it 2 hours after I got my HVX200 home. I would suggest Cineform for conversions but theyre just in the process of licensing the raylight codecs because they are superior, and yield higher quality conversions with smaller file sizes.

If you want built in MXF support then you need Edius, Avid, or FCP. (ok FCP uses a raylight style ingestion/conversion process)

    Raylight is pc only.

I have a similar question, so I will tack it on here. I am about to embark on an AE project. We are planning to shoot 25fps 720p on a Varicam for PAL presentation (we may also try doing some slow motion stuff). If the footage is captured as DVCPRO HD Quicktime files, will I be able to use them directly in AE on the Mac? Will I will need to get an upgrade to FCP to get the correct codec? Are there any problems working with the codec in PAL format, or using other frame rates?

I have had no problem with HVX P2 footage on the Mac, using FCP and AE. I recommend you upgrade FCP, since 5.1 (if I recall) imports it a little more easily than 5.0.

For more info, you might want to check out the Panasonic P2 forum on the COW.
