General Error 41
Posted by Randolph Harrison on November 27, 2006 at 5:48 amI have Final Cut Pro installed on two computers. I copied the project from one to another. The second computer will not open the project…it gives me “General Error 41”. Apple’s website lists that as “can’t locate finder”. Can anyone help me with this. Thank you in advance.

November 27, 2006 at 6:01 amAre both computers running the exact same versions of FCP? I’ve seen this error when you’re coming from a 5.1. system to a 5.0 system for example… You can go up in versions, but can’t go down.

November 27, 2006 at 9:31 amI just checked and one has been updated, apparently from 5.1.1 to 5.1.2. I will see if I can upgrade the other and let you know. Thanks for the quick response.

November 27, 2006 at 9:13 pmGood news…after updating, the project opened… now, not so good news, …When trying to reconnect media, I get the window to reconnect and instead of the selected clips listed in the window, it says offline clips “missing. Any ideas?
Thanks for all of your help.

November 27, 2006 at 9:35 pmI read somewhere else that projects saved as xml can be opened in any version. Maybe you could try that to bring your clips back to life.

November 28, 2006 at 2:19 pmAre the clips on the computer? Can you reconnect them manually?

December 1, 2006 at 3:28 amPlease excuse my inexperience…the clips show up in the bin. How would I connect them manually other than with the drop down menu to reconnect media? Thanks.

December 1, 2006 at 7:20 pmThat’s the only way I know how to do it (ctrl-click -> Reconnect Media). Then again, I’m not that experienced, either.
Are the media files valid and playable once imported into your project? import the clip into a dummy bin to test this.
My experience has been that even if I selected the wrong media file for manual reconnect, even when the filename, reel name, media length and timecode (maybe even the codec) do not match, FCP will still let you connect your clip to that media with a warning. If the clip on your sequence is too short, FCP will automatically trim it for you.
(not sure if it’ll make any difference, but if you can go back to the original project file on the previous computer, can you try the XML export?)
