i just ran an update for after effects 7, and as the start up screen was scanning and loading plug-ins, it slowed down to a crawl then my computer became extremely sluggish. Anyone know what would cause this? Ive had the slow plugh-/scan thing happen before, randomly at times. Im confused.

Maybe one of your plugins is not 100% compatible to AE 7. Try to remove all third-party plugins and see if the problem is persistent or goes away.

Have you tried resetting the preferences file?

When you start After Effects hold down the Shift+ Option + Command key on a Mac or the Shift+ Alt + Control key in Windows.

The OpenGL plugin is know to cause startup crashes, try removing it and then re-launching After Effects.

would this be the same as removing the “use openGL when availble” option in rendering?

No you must drag the OpenGl Plug in out of the plug in folder.
