FCP to DVD recorder
When we connect FCP to a DVD recorder via firewire, we only get black screen, but if we replace the DVD recorder with a DV VCR, FCP plays out perfect, so it seems like FCP “blocks” the firewire signal when it’s a DVD recorder that are at the end of the firewire cable ?????
Is it, and how, possible to get our DV production from FCP directly out to a DVD recorder ? -

Hook the DV deck up to the DVD deck with firewire. Can you play a DV tape and get it to appear on the DVD deck?
There may be something set wrong in the DVD deck and having a DV tape playing is the easiest way to trouble-shoot that. If you can get that to work and then it STILL won’t work, it might be that Final Cut doesn’t “see” the DVD deck as a deck. Anyway, I’d confirm that the DVD deck is accepting signals over the firewire before you mess around with Final Cut too much.

OK, we’ll try to play out from DV tape to the DVD deck, but it seems like FCP detects that it isn’t a VCR/deck that are on the end, and then it “blocks” the firewire signal

oughh, my fault 🙁
The customer HAS tried to play out from the DV machine to the DVD deck, and it work fine, so it seems like the “problem” is at the FCP signal.Sorry

Then I’d go with zrb’s suggestion. FCP -> Firewire -> DV Deck -> S-video cable -> DVD Recorder
There’s a slight generation loss there, but it’s probably not very much and it will be “live.”
If quality is the MOST important thing then I’d say dub it to a DV tape and then run that off to the DVD over firewire. Takes twice the time, though. I’d go with the “live” option myself.

did you read the fine print on the DVD recorder? Most all standalone DVD Recorders do not work with computer/nle firewire connections, and usually they say that somewhere in the owners guide. Even when you try and just do a simple “crash record” on the DVD recorder. there must be something in the firewire stream that tells the DVD recorder its Not a camera
I know cuz i have been trying to find a DVD recorder that i could “drive” like a VTR from FCPDVD recorders want to be “the boss” ie they want to communicate with a dv camera and tell it what to do. Even the Pioneeer LVX 1, which is a thousand dollar machine, does not work well with a computer, unless the computer can be controlled like a VTR (read Avid)

Knowing this, I always send FCP’s output to DV TAPE first.
(Good to have a DV “master” of that timeline dubbed out of FCP, just in case, anyway.)
Then I connect a DV camcorder (home video camera, I’ve got a pile of ’em) and make my DVD copies from the DV camera via FW to the DVD recorder.
I can continue to edit on other projects on FCP while the DVD’s are recording with the full DV quality (no analog “steps).
