  FCP and Western Digital MyBook 2GB Max???????

  I’m using the new quad xeon and a macbook pro for FCP editing, we are using the Western Digital external 500GB drives for our projects and all of our capture scratch files and FCP exports are being divided into 2GB max folders on the drives. for example: capture scratch file “Take 1” (60 min clip) saves on the western digital drive as: Take 1-av followed by: Take 1-av-1 Take 1-av-2, Take 1-av-3 and so on.
  only the first version of this file will work, the av-1, av-2, av-3 etc do not open (quicktime error: “The movie could not be opened”)

  Anyone know whats going on?

  Your drive is likely formatted improperly and for PC. Erase it and start over with Disk Utility.
  Either that or your scratch disk prefs “Limit on Capture Now” is enabled, which it is not by default.

  Avoid using Capture Now if you know what’s good for you.

  My Book Drives are formated in FAT32 which has a four gig file limit, but works on both Mac and PC. NTFS is the preferred file format for Windows but OS X cannot write to it directly. Kevin is right, you need to do a quick reformat using Disk Utility. Be sure not to choose Journaling as it can cause the drive to run slower.
