I own an IMac that I bought a little over a year ago, so it does not contain the intel processor…..it’s a 2 GHz PowerPC G5, with 2 GB of ram…….(and 250 GB hard drive)………I’ve done several student projects on it…it’s worked beautifully so far. But, I’m now hoping to shoot a feature-length film in HD on Panasonic P2….so I’ll upgrade to FCP 5.1 (which is required, right?)…….my question is, will my machine be able to handle the project?…….do I absolutely need to upgrade to an intel processor?……if it’s not an absolute necessity, how manageable (meaning playback and rendering speed) would this HD film be on my machine?

    Thanks in advance.

I have been on location for close to 2 months editing a feature being shot on P2 with a G4 Powerbook. There’s no question that a G5 can handle this media, as long as you have adequate drives & some way to import the P2 media. In the field, I’ve been using FW800 drives. They’re capable of playing back the HD 24PN without dropping frames. We’ve been able to play back footage and we’ve been able to make scratch keys & comps of shots on the Mac minutes after it’s been shot. It’s a whole new way of working!!!

    Hi,

I’m working right now on a feature-length DVC PRO HD documentary on a three-year old G5 1,8 single processor and the editing works perfectly fine. I installed a SCSI-card and a 1,5 TB RAID in order to store the files. I did some viewing on Firewire 800 disks as well which also worked, after all, with DVC PRO HD you only have a data rate of 100 MB/s.
    Best regards,

    Volker

Isn’t it though? EBing able to rough together what you shot at the end of a day or minutes after shooting is sweet. Definitely helps client types see the big picture.

I’m working with a director with nearly 40 years of experience. We’re both blown away by the idea that we can do effects on a laptop. Days, hours or minutes after they’ve been shot! And the idea that we can hold the equivalent of 2000 feet of film or half a reel of any pro tape format on a DVD that costs around $1.70 doesn’t hurt!
