Best Consumer DVD recorder for recording cuts to
I have a Kona LHE and am workign on Final Cut Pro 5.0. I want to send cuts to clients on DVD. As of now I am using a Panasonic DVD recorderDMR-ES15, but the recorder is recording things too dark. I looked in the recorder’s setup menu and the black level only has two adjustments “darker” and “lighter”. I need somewhere in the middle. Does anyone have any suggestions with this recorder or couldl someone recomend a recorder that would record truer color.
I am outputing componet through my Kona LHE. Footage originated on DVCPRO HD and is 24p. shot on varicam.

Does this dvd recorder record component in?
In the kona prefrences is the set up (black level) set to ire 0? If it’s already there try 7.5 and use the lighter setting on the dvd recorder.
I’m very unhappy with my sony rdr gx315. I’m not sure how the sony 900 or 1000(UK ver.) is. They have component in. I’m afraid of sony in dvd, they seem to over protective in anything that deals with copying. My previous machine was a philips 985 with component in and it was excellent except for it’s short life. These things are basically made as “disposable”, they don’t seem to last. To bad the pioneer LX1 didn’t use normal user replaceable burners.

Don’t feed Component to the DVD Recorder, feed S-Video or Composite, they do a better job recording SD that way.
We run a Philips DVD Recorder we picked up at Circuit City and it works great off our Kona 2 and 3 systems.

How woudl I feed s-video from the kona LHE? I do not have a break out box with it.

1. we use a unit called a lite-on. its an off brand but we actully have good results with it, and they are easy to use. unfortunately the disc always has a menu. so you cannot make a straight autoplay
2. we have a kona lh, and we keep it in component out. we use our beta sp machine as a “component to s video” transcoder to feed the lite on. you may need to do the same, or buy a standalone component to s video converter.

The Kona manual tells how the component cables become the luma and chroma cables in S-video mode and composite in that mode. You would need an additional adaptor cable to connect S-video to the DVD recorder. For composite, you’ll only need a BNC to RCA adaptor.

I am a little confused. what did you mean by: “the Kona manual tells how the component cables become the luma and chroma cables in S-video mode and composite in that mode.” I am also noticing that the image is missing some yellow. Shots look a little bluer and our yellow subtitles sometimes apear white. Any advice would be appreciated. i also have no beta deck or breakoutbox for the Kona.

You should have a copy of a PDF version of the manual. If you can’t find it on your system (Kona Utilities folder??), you can download it from the AJA website. Your LHe has 3 BNC cables for analog output. You can use the Kona control panel to set the analog video to composite, S-video, or Component. When it’s set to S-video, two of the three cables are used for luma and chroma. The PDF manual tells which two to use–I don’t have it in front of me at the moment (probably green is luma and red is chroma?). You don’t need the Kona breakout box to use this feature. The AJA support people can help with system setup issues.It’s pretty critical to get familiar with the Kona Control Panel and to understand what it does for you, because you need to change its settings for certain special situations. I have no clue on the color problem you describe. The things to troubleshoot would be your FCP settings, your monitoring, your Kona control panel settings, and your cabling.
