My work has just bought a load of Power Mac G5’s and FCP to go with them. So far I only have limited experience with using FCP (a days tuition from an Apple employee) and a couple of days messing around on it, but one thing I have started to notice is that the programme seems to have trouble realtime rendering transitions. If for instance I place a transition on the timeline when it is about to preview it it doesn’t attempt to and then skips past it. Other times I can play the same section and it will play it fine.

I thought at first maybe this was a memory problem but then these are state of the art G5’s with 4 gig of memory, so this shouldn’t be an issue?

What could be causing this problem?

Also is there any hardware you can get for FCP that allows realtime rendering, for example like Avids Mojo?

    Thanks

Its either realtime or render, but not “realtime render.” Essentially, every transition must eventually be rendered as FCP is a software only editing system. The realtime aspect of FCP allows you to playback most unrendered events on the timeline such as transitions, but not at full resolution, until they are rendered. Does this make sense?

Yes it does make sense what your saying but my problem is that its not even attempting to render the transitions even at a reduced resolution. Its just skipping passed those bits.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks.

Sounds almost like you have video on multiple tracks and you have “Play Base Layer Only” selected in the Sequence. Make sure that is NOT selected and be set up for Dynamic RT so FCP will play the transitions in realtime while you’re editing, assuming you have a fast enough array to play the media.

Yes I do have video on multiple tracks. I’ll give your idea a try thanks.

Hopefully the array is fast enough it’s an Omneon array:
