OLD iMAC AS MONITOR AND HARD DRIVE??….POSSIBLE??..help!
Posted by Justin Dee on October 19, 2006 at 9:50 pmSTUCK?!
I’ve been uploading alot of footage to my computer for my current project and have realized I’m half way through and basically..I’m going to run out of gig to keep the footage on my computer. I have an old iMAC that I don’t use that I was thinking about using as a hard drive and monitor for editing. Would this be possible and if so…how do I hook them up together?
Any help appreciated..
Cheers..

October 19, 2006 at 10:11 pmYou could technically use the iMac as an external hard disk, but not a monitor. Connect your computers with a firewire cable, and boot your iMac up while holding down T on the keyboard.
Depending on the format of video you’re using this may or may not be fast enough for you. You may also run into issues with connecting other firewire devices, but I think you could use the second port on the iMac to attach other devices to your computer. Everything else you hook up will come at a speed cost.Zak

October 19, 2006 at 10:15 pmYou can use the drive on the iMac for offline or network storage if you hook them together with ethernet or TCIP over Firewire. (See the online help system, not difficult but too complex to go over here.) The results will vary depending on yoor format but ethernet is pretty good for DV. The problem is you’re not going to be talking directly to the drive in the iMac; you’re accessing the drive through the iMac’s networking subroutines, via the OS.
You will not be able to use the iMac as a monitor.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

you should not be capturing your video into your main drive anyway always capture onto a second drive.

I’ll go buy another Firewire cable and try the advice.
“saving on the second drive”??..did I mention both computers are MAC’s?…don’t won’t to sound like a newbie (well I basically am) but I’m confused here.
Thanks again..will try and see what happens.
