  Export for AVID

  Hi all,
  I would like to export a 30 minute program as an 8 bit uncompressed QT with 4 audio Tracks for import into an Avid – anything I have to watch out for? Will the Avid import such a large file in a resaonable amount of time?

  If you’re exporting an uncompressed quicktime expect a long wait while Avid converts it to an .omf file. If you render it out in an Avid codec, say Avid 1:1 or Avid Meridian Uncompressed, it’ll be much, much, much faster. Export a quicktime with a shorter piece of media in an Avid codec and compare the import time and quality to the same file, uncompressed. It might give you the quality you need and save you a lot of time.

  Just a quick warning…
  Exporting with an Avid codec would be ideal for this, but I remember hearing that FCP 5.1.2 crashes on startup with Avid codecs installed. Anyone else hear that? Am I misremembering?
  Depending on what version of FCP you have, you may want to be careful. There may be an opportunity cost involved with one method versus another.

  It’s been all over these boards that the newest FCP does crash with Avid codecs (coincidence?) 🙂 If you have the latest version, using Avid codecs is out of the question, so you might as well go with uncompressed or animation–animation will give you a smaller file size.
