  • Producing a demo reel using 2 different comp sizes

    Hello all!

I’m attempting to make my first demo reel, and I have AE compositions I’d like to include that are both HDV compositions as well as standard NTSC comps. Of course, when I render these out as Quicktimes (with the intention of bringing them into Final Cut Pro to cut), I’ll have an issue as FCP doesn’t deal with different resolutions on the same timeline.

Having said that, should I scale up the NTSC comps or scale down the HDV comps (or neither)? Basically, I don’t want to recreate the compositions, as considerable time went into them at the resolutions at which they were composed.

    Thanks in advance!

    Gino

I think you know that the answer would be to scale your HDV down and letterbox it. If this demo is for the web, the loss of resolution and frame size won’t be so much of an issue.

    Hi Ian,

The piece will hopefully end up on DVD, but yes, it will certainly live on the web.

Could you describe how to scale down the HDV footage and letterbox it? (Not sure if I just resize the comp or what).

Thanks, Ian, for the fast reply.

    Best,

Yeah, Dave, I was thinking about something similar: I was planning on parenting my 16×9 footage to a null then scaling down the entire comp (pretty similar to what you described). Of course, the opposite will work as well. I’ll play with a few iterations of this and see what turns out to be the path of least resistance…

    Thanks again, all!

Why don’t you just letter box it and then resize the footage when you’re rendering it out? That or just precomp it and resize it to match your new composition size.
