Export Problem
I’m certain the problem is the source video from the DVD, but I’m wondering if any of you have had the same problem.
I am taking 12 minutes of video about our company from a DVD and exporting it as an AVI. The problem is, only 2 minutes of video exports. I tried exporting from After Effects just to see if it was the application or settings, and the same problem occurs. The source video has been taken from the DVD by capturing to miniDV and with MPEG Streamclip.
The video was shot at 23.98 fps, and I have changed the sequence settings to compensate for that. I have even tried 24, 29.97 and 30 fps. I have also tried exporting at the native 720X480 along with 640X480 and 320X240.
None of my other videos have this problem. I exported a video slideshow from FCP today with a running time of 50 minutes.
What can cause a video to only export 2 minutes?
Another thing that happened was that I tried exporting the video from another computer and it only exported 1:30 and the last 27 frames were from another video!

What software are you using to export to AVI? Quicktime? Cleaner? I ask because I have yet to sucessfully export a clip or timeline to AVI. Now, I have been able to export a Quicktime movie and open it in Quicktime and then export to AVI but not from FCP or AE.

I’m using Final Cut Pro 5, and have tried exporting using After Effects 7. I’ll try exporting to quicktime then using quicktime to export an AVI like you suggested. Thanks! Hope it works!
If anyone else has suggestions, please let me know.

I’m sorry, but I have to ask…
Why are you exporting to AVI?
AVI has lesser quality than Quicktime or WMV. In order to export to WMV, you’ll need to purchase Flip4Mac’s WMV Studio series plugin. Which one depends on what you wish to do. Personally, I have WMV Studio Pro but it doesn’t output HD video. I haven’t needed that just yet.

Yeah, I’d rather not…
Our web developers here use PCs, and the only video they can use from us Mac people upstairs is the AVI format. It’s really long and difficult to explain, but the short of it is they cannot upgrade to anything that would allow them to use quicktime files.
So, we give them AVIs.
I tried your method, and it actually gets worse. After exporting to AVI from quicktime, it has no audio/video. I’m at a loss.
I always export short clips to AVI for them, all under 2 minutes. If a sequence was 8 minutes for example, I would export 4 2 minute sequences. This is the first time I have tried exporting a full sequence in AVI because they wanted to do a two pass scan for the encoding, and they could not do that with multiple clips apparently.
Any other ideas of what I can do?

Here’s something….
Ask your web developers if you could give them Flash video files for the website. If so, you can go to On2.com and visit this page:
https://www.on2.com/consumer/flix-exporter
And then you can export your timelines straight to Flash video – much more web friendly. I have to do this with a show sponsor who wants a copy of their shows for their website.
I mention this because you said that they take you AVIs and encode them again? This would solve everybody’s problem, and you could stay away from those icky AVIs.

I just spoke with one of them, and he says they can’t do that because of the size of videos we do.
Another thing is the people who are viewing these vids have laptops supplied by the company, which means they are password protected by an admin. They can’t download plugins or upgrades. It’s not a very good system they have going on…

what are you exporting to? In other words, what is the drive you are exporting to formatted as? Are you running into a two gig limit? Is it HFS plus or formatted for windows?

I have exported to 2 types of drives. The drive on my Mac, which is MAC OSX extended journaled. My LaCie drive, which is also extended. So, neither has the 2 gig limit since I have exported larger files. I have exported 2 hour videos for DVDs, only those were quicktime files.
It is only the AVI file I have trouble exporting. Rather, AVI clips that are longer than 2 minutes. Shorter than 2 minutes, I can export to AVI perfectly.
