5.0 vs. 5.1 on a Mac Pro
Posted by Paul Kondo on October 9, 2006 at 1:38 pmForgetting about any new features, does one see a performance upgrade using fcp 5.1 versus 5.0 on a Mac Pro?
This is more a timing issue for me about getting the cross grade. Am I going to see any noticeable performance increase using 5.1?
Thanks,
PK

October 9, 2006 at 1:46 pmI think the big difference between 5 and 5.1 on the Mac Pro is that 5.1 will install and run… which can be huge. 5.0 is the PowerPC only release. 5.1 is the first universal version of FCP. You have to have 5.1 to use it on a Mac Pro. If you have FCS, it’s just a $50 or so “crossgrade” fee, and a bit of a wait to get replacement install discs from Apple. That’s only for a few more months though, so you should jump on it before it becomes a $250 or so upgrade.
Sorry you got the first pre-coffee post of Monday morning.

which will be in January, according to the form on Apple’s site.

October 9, 2006 at 2:17 pmThanks Zak. That’s pretty funny. I never even considered the fact that 5.0 wouldn’t run on a Mac Pro. Maybe I needed my coffee before sending out that post.

October 9, 2006 at 2:29 pmNo worries… I came back to check on the thread now that I’ve had a cup of coffee and was feeling more and more like a big huge jerk. Glad everything is straightened out. Thanks VenoAlex for clarification on the January thing… I couldn’t remember if was beginning of the new year or some time in November or December.
