I’m about to start some tests to see what does the best scaling, so I thought I’d ask opinions.
    I’ve got a bunch of 4:3 Beta-SP I’d like to incorporate into a 720P sequence (16:9, of course).
Shane has a tutorial on using Compressor, Randy Tinfow from ImagePlant suggests AE. Any other
    hints, opinions, gotchas, favorites?
    TIA,
    Ed

I haven’t used either but there is also Instant HD (Red Giant) and Resizer (Digital Anarchy)

Please let us here at the forum know what kinda results you get, especially between AE and Compressor, as I (and no doubt others) have a lot of BetaSP “legacy” 4×3 stock to incorporate into 16×9 shows

now granted we are doing DVCPRO50 16×9 for our final output in most all cases, so its not as much upscaling as 720p, but we still have to blow up the stuff to make it fit (no black pillars)

so when you get some results and or time, post em here. Please? OK!

I’ve just had a great experience using Red Giant’s Instant HD in After Effects. I upconverted some NTSC DVCam footage to HDCam (1920 x 1080) 25p and the results have passed the network’s QC people! Granted, the footage that was upconverted was meant to look “dirty”, and we messed around with it a lot in colour correction, but for my money, I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

I should also point out that the footage was first deinterlaced using the REVision Effects deinterlacer plugin and then the deinterlaced footage was interpreted as 25fps rather than 29.97.

Instant HD works in FCP too, so for $100 it may be worth a look.
    I’ll report back.
