  • PAL sonyZ1E running NTSC SD rushes into to FCP 5.0.4

    Hi Creativecow,

I have shot some SD material on a NTSC Z1 camera. Now back in PAL zone, the material plays back on the viewfinder of my sonyZ1E (sound and vision fine). I want to digitise this into my FCP 5.0.4 but it won’t. It keeps saying video source not present. I have confirmed that the PAL Z1E is playing back in NTSC play mode. However this doesn’t go through the firewire. I have tried changing my FCP capture settings to DVNTSC.

If I can get the material into FCP then I can standards convert the few shots I need.

    Any ideas?

    many Thanks

    Hi
iMovie v2 or maybe v3 was a lot less fussy, but to get iMovie to successfully fire up in NTSC mode when you have a PAL camera required some trickery – basically you have to have an NTSC FW device connected when you open iMovie, I used a Canopus ADVC100. As soon as iMovie is ready and expecting to capture some NTSC DV you whip the FW cable out of the ADVC into the DV camera, press play and off it goes. Use scene detect to capture the whole lot in one go.
    No timecode though…

    Hi
Or maybe you can switch your Z1 to NTSC mode to play the tape.

The Z1 auto senses what format the tape is. There is no switch. Surely pulling the firewire plug could damage the firewire bus. So it is not recommended even though I can see your logic in trying to fool the machine.

Doesn’t seem to be any solution other than getting the tape standards converted.

    Hi
The Z1s they sell in Europe have an NTSC/PAL menu setting, and have to be shut-down/restarted to bring this into effect – just like a J-30 DigiBeta player. That to will give analogue playback of either standard in either setting, but nor properly out of its SDI or FW ports.
