I’m trying to track a field order problem and I just realised I don’t know how this works.

I’ve got PAL DV original footage (shot DV.) The field order for this is even (also known as lower.) I’ve had the footage captured via SDI to 8 bit uncompressed. What I don’t know is what happens to the field order here.

My guess is one of two things:

    1) The field order is ignored. Field one on the DV tape is now field one in the uncompressed file. In this case the field order is effectively reversed when I play the footage back, right?

    2) The field order is swapped. The whole image is shifted up or down one line to keep the motion smooth.

But which one is it, if either?

    Anyone?

    Thanks,

    Will

Number 2 because SDI is always upper field for PAL. The deck handles changing the field order by shifting the image up one line so you should see a line of black at the bottom.

    Yes will,
The question is the field dominance of your time line. If you bring to a time-line footage with the opposite field order, FC automatically set the

    Hi Will,
Yes, all the other replies are correct.

PAL is upper field first (unlike NTSC) but when setting the DV standard in PAL, it appears a mistake was made and hence PAL DV is bottom field first. Crazy !
