  How do I raid internal HDs in Mac Pro for FCP editing?

  Can anyone explain how I raid internal HDs in a new Mac Pro for FCP editing? I’ve been in Disc Utilities and can’t figure it out at all.

  I have 4 internal drives in total, one for system/fcp etc and 3 others. I was going to raid 2 together but can’t figure it out.

  Finally, is it neccesary to raid for HDV editing? if not, I’d still like to know how it is done.

  Not necessary to Raid drives for HDV editing. They have the same data rate as DV (yet twice to three times the image size…figure that out). You wouldn’t need to raid them for DVCPRO HD either.

  In the Disk Utility you select the drives you want to RAID and then click on the RAID button (FIRST AID, ERASE, PARTITION, RAID…) then configure. Mirrored RAID will give you the amount of room on ONE drive, but capture to both so that in case one fails, you have the information on the other…backup drive basically. STRIPED Raid is the one that makes the drives appear as one and gets you the better speeds.

  Be careful how you phrase your questions, you may get what you ask for, but not the information you really need.

  There are many things in this world that aren’t necessary, but they are highly desireable. Striping your drives together as a Raid is highly desirable for several reasons.

  1) the drives will be much faster giving you mush more RT performance
  2) you won’t have to remember where you stored things because they will be on one virtual drive rather than on several separate drives
