  • Many objects in 3D space

Posted by Dolver on December 21, 2006 at 3:27 pm

Hey folks — this one seems as though it would be really popular, but I don’t even know what search terms to use to find a tutorial.

Basically, I want to be in 3D space and create many instances of an object, all in a row. Then I will make the camera fly by them all. I COULD just copy each layer, move it the correct distance away from the previous layer, and repeat a million times, but I figure there HAS to be a better/faster/less messy way.

Anyone have any ideas? Or know of any tutorials that explain how to do this? Let me know if my description wasn’t clear enough. Thanks!

Trapcodes echospace is the baby for you. It is (like all the other trapcode plugins) absolutely awesome. Check out the website at

    http://www.trapcode.com

its also darn good value! $49 and you get a whole lot less brain drain.

If you have access to Cinema 4D and some time to become familiar with it, the MoGraph module is a powerful tool for instancing objects in 3D space. Plus, Cinema 4D nicely exports to an AE comp!

You don’t need to learn the application in-depth to get some use out of MoGraph. The Cow has a few tutorials too, I believe.

Or you can just add this expression to your layer on the position value. Then just duplicate it “a million” times 🙂 Then camera away…..
Just change 100 to however many pixels you wish to displace the layer in z space

    position+[0,0,(index-1)*100]

3d assistants from https://www.digitalanarchy.com allow you to create any number of objects in a variety of arrangements and then fly the camera all around them. Totally cool. Also can do the same with lighting, which opens up a million possibilities.

Excellent. You can also apply an expression control (effect) slider, highlight the 100 text, then pickwhip to the slider for more flexibility.

    Before duplicating, that is. 🙂

Awesome — these are good — I will probably go with the expression for this one (ya know, cuz its free), but if I need to do something crazier in the future, the software mentioned looks really cool. Thanks everyone.

as mentioned above, the 3D assistants – the “Lite” version probably came with your version of AE, and the cubic distribution can be used to do what you want, to an extent. I’d used the expression with a slider myself, then hit {ctrl} or {cmd} + “D” as many times as you need. Should take a few seconds. Depending on the look you want, you might try playing with “auto-orient towards camera” as well… you can fly past the art and it will automatically rotate around the camera and get out of the way.

Unfortunately, 3D assistants lite doesn’t come with AE7, nor will the 3D assistants lite from 6.5 work with AE7.

wow – I didn’t know that. I’d downloaded the trial and played with it, but didn’t see a reason to upgrade (since I don’t earn a living with it!). I have missed out on being able to download current projects, but usually the tutorials are done in such a way that I can follow along. That’s good info to know!

… of course, the full version of 3D assistants works with AE 7. 🙂
