Why shoot in HDV?
My reason for asking is how many of you output back to HDV? Do you take your master HDV tape to a duplication house and have it bumped to a HD format?
If you are making DVDs from your HDV timeline, how much better is the quality than shooting DV or SD for that matter? Just curious as I haven’t shot or edited in HDV yet. I do have a HVR M-15U but have only used it for DV so far.

Haven’t done it myself yet, but there are lots of posts here and other forums/lists where people say they are
generally mastering out to HD with a rented deck, or in the case of DVDs, the most common opinion
is that shooting in HDV and downconverting gives a much better final SD image for DVD than shooting in SD.

That is a wide ranging statement. Give me a Digibeta shoot, 10bit edit & DVD master & put that up against the same in HDV.

I see a few reasons to shoot HDV. Firstly when you want a cost effective HD final product for broadcast. Secondly when you want a small discreet handy cam shoot for standard def. Thirdly when you want to get as close to SD digi beta but can’t afford digi beta.
If you want to shoot the best you can in standard def, then digi beta wins. The Canon HDV comes closest to digi beta in SD and also closest to HDCam in HD. But HDV is not the best format for either SD or HD, just the most cost effective.

Sorry Peter, maybe I wasn’t being clear enough. I was comparing shooting in HDV mode and downconverting to DV (SD) in the same camera.
I think that’s what the question was mostly about, but he may have also meant to compare *any* SD (including Digibeta)
to HDV.

This is definitely one of those “do a search” times. If you do a “HDV to HD” search of posts, in the AJA IO, AJA Kona, FCP,
Broadcast Video, High-end HD, and HDV forums, you’ll find lots and lots of answers to that.
