  • Mixing 720p24 DVCPro HD with 24p DVX/XL2 footage

I’m editing a piece that was shot primarily using DVCPro HD (Panasonic P2 files). We started by importing all of those files in to FCP, selecting the “remove advance pull-down/extra frames” option.

I also need to mix in some 24p DV footage shot on the DVX and Canon XL2 – I believe these were both shot using a normal 2:3:2:3 pulldown. Is there any way to capture that footage, removing the extra frames or convert it to 23.98fps? What is the best way to mix the DV footage with the DVCPro HD in FCP?

You’ll need to capture the DV material as 29.97, then remove the pulldown as a file conversion. Only in the 24pa mode (2:3:3:2) can the pulldown be removed during capture. You can remove the pulldown in Cinema Tools… see page 119 in the online help for Cinema tools for the process… it’s pretty easy.

You’ll also need to convert these files to DVCPROHD or render them as you put them in a sequence.

Also… Use Compressor to make the upconversion from DV to HD… There’s a preset for this in the “Advanced Format Conversions” submenu.

Thanks for the help, sounds like it should be simpler than I thought.

One more question: If I need to deliver this on DV tape, what is the best method to do that? Should I export at 29.97fps, bring it back into FCP, then print to tape?

Edit in HD all the way… then export to Compressor and down convert to DV that way…

All of this is a lot easier if you can perform a hardware conversion with something like a Kona 3…

Ok…I have a question about upconverting DV to DVCPRO HD. I did this with DV footage thru Compressor, and let me tell you the upconvert was IMPRESSIVE. BUT, it took the 4:3 image and stretched it out to 16:9…as DVCPRO HDs dimensions are 16:9. How do I upconvert this footage to DVCPRO HD and have it push in and crop off the top and bottom instead of stretching out the image?

Sometimes I have to incorporate stock footage into shows, and they are only available on digibeta, or beta, or DVCPRO 50.
